Anxiety involves an overactive amygdala and reduced top-down control from the PFC. • Meditation training is associated with increased PFC activity during emotional regulation tasks and decreased amygdala reactivity to negative stimuli. • Attention control, a PFC function, improves measurably with practice. Sustained attention and working memory tasks show gains after training programs of a few weeks. • Clinically, mindfulness-based stress reduction reduces anxiety symptoms at a magnitude comparable to first-line SSRI treatment (Hoge et al., 2023, n=276).
